General understanding of federal taxation

General Description:

Participants will learn what types of IRS penalties can and cannot be abated, the procedures involved in abating penalties, how to analyze the options, and how to write effective penalty abatement letters.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this course the participant will be able to:

  • Analyze facts and circumstances of a taxpayer's situation to determine whether penalty relief is a viable option.
  • Use the IRS First Time Abate programs to obtain quick and easy penalty relief.
  • Apply statutory, regulatory, and Internal Revenue Manual provisions to determine whether penalties were correctly assessed in the first instance.
  • Write effective penalty abatement letters that give clients the best chance for relief.
  • Apply Circular 230 and other ethical obligations in presenting your client's request for abatement.


Brian F. Huebsch is a tax attorney and partner with Anderson & Jahde, PC. Over the past 17 years he has represented hundreds of taxpayers in resolving their civil and criminal tax ­problems. He and Steven Anderson also represent attorneys and accounting professionals in ­disciplinary and other professional matters, and serve as local insurance defense counsel for a large CPA malpractice insurance carrier. He presents continuing professional education ­seminars regularly for CPE4U.
